Viewing Assignment: Extremely Public Displays of Privacy (DUE 10/17)

Many of the examples of collage that we've looked at are materials-based, i.e. paper, photos, assemblage, or language-based, i.e. words, text. For this next assignment, we invite you to consider how theatrical experiences are collaged.

In advance of next week's visiting artist, New Paradise Laboratories Artistic Director Whit MacLaughlin, view their latest work, Extremely Public Displays of Privacy.  Act 1 of this innovative theatrical piece is viewable entirely online at http://extremelypublicdisplays.com.  The 2nd and 3rd acts are partially viewable online.

After you "watch" Extremely Public Displays of Privacy, respond in writing to the following questions:

Audience - Given that this play is a mixture of online and in-person performance, discuss what it is to be an audience of the show. How does one experience the show? How does its use of media and technology influence your processing/interpretation of the show?

Artist - Similarly, imagine yourself as one of the creators of this work. How might its mixture of online and in-person performance change the work of the artist/author/designer/director?

Production and Management - And lastly, how might its mix of online and in-person experience impact how the show is produced, managed, and organized? How would producing and managing this show be different from a typical theatrical piece in a physical theater?

Responses should be minimum one page in length, single spaced. As always, typed, paginated, printed, and stapled. Due next class on 10/17.
